I tried this recipe in 2021 (I was brave at this moment), and loved it soooo much! didn't do it again since then, but I plan to redo next week. I will be exhausted, but I really need to eat it again! in south congo the food you need to make to be called a good cooker is sombe - in swahili (pronounced sombay). These are cooked cassava leaves. they are toxic, like the roots by the way, and they must be soaked in boiling water for 5 minutes to destroy the toxin, then take them out very hot, wring them out, and pound them with the traditional wooden pestle (the leaves are very very hard, I think they must be impossible to chew whole), then fry in virgin palm oil (orange or red) onions, tomatoes, dried and smoked fish, turmeric, dwarf eggplants, one chayotte finely cut and some pumpkin seeds' powder. when everything is aromatic and toasted, add the cassava leaf paste and adjust the consistency with water: the result is a slightly liquid vegetable puree. This is eaten with rice or with foufou (corn or cassava flour dough). the recipe is long, difficult (crushing the sombe is very hard), it’s complicated to adjust the flavors, and the sombe can be delicious just as it can be horrible if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Hi Maangchi! My parents visited me for my college graduation this weekend and I just made this for them tonight. It was so yummy! I could not find any rice syrup at my local Asian market, so I used corn syrup that I found there instead. It seems that the corn syrup I got isn’t really super sweet? I added the same amount of corn syrup as the recommended amount of rice syrup you use here, but ended up adding more because it was almost unnoticeable. Is rice syrup usually sweeter than the corn syrup you can find at the Asian market? Thank you, and much love!! 🤍

I tried this tonight but only had a stainless steel pan AND coconut flour. It was a fail lol. 😂 The flour never dissolved, no matter how much water I added. The pancake wouldn’t solidify in the pan. So I tried making it into a scrambled type hash. That was an even worse fail lol. 🤮 My kid tried a small bite and her face said it all. Afterward she said to me, “BTS would not approve.” 😂🤣 Ah well. I’ll try again some other time with a different flour and use a nonstick pan.

Followed your recipe step by step, except I had some chicken thigh in the fridge so mixed that in with the chicken breast. (I do agree the chicken breast shreds more pretty) Kneaded and cut the noodles with the kids, they had so much fun! Served it with your traditional kimchi recipe I made also with the kids (aged 8 and 6). Everyone loved it, from children, adult, to elderly korean. Now I am famous to them lol. They asked me how did I do it, I’m not even korean? I just link you 😊🎉😂

I just made this today, but substituted the anchovy stock for chicken stock and added in some courgettes and enoki mushrooms. It left me so full and satisfied. The jjigae tasted so amazing, it was honestly super tasty!!! And spicy just how I love it. Now I can make this myself at home whenever I’m craving it, instead of spending a lot of money at a restaurant. Thank you for sharing this recipe with us ☺️🫶🏼
